Golf: Poulter grabs one-stroke lead at Hilton Head

RBC Heritage- Round Three

Englishman Poulter, who won at Houston earlier this month, went out with the early starters and made seven birdies in a bogey-free trip around the course.

Victor of last year's John Deere Classic, DeChambeau - who finished runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the Arnold Palmer Invitational - is ahead of Kim Si-woo and Ian Poulter.

DeChambeau had been 6-under par on Harbour Town's three par 5s the first two rounds.

Ian Poulter put himself firmly into contention for a second PGA Tour win in the space of a fortnight after a flawless 64 on the second day of the RBC Heritage.

Poulter showed he's not done playing high-level golf with a bogey-free 64.

Overnight leader Rory Sabbatini dropped to fourth following his 70, while Brandt Snedeker (64), Chesson Hadley (68) and Luke List (64) are also two shots off the pace.

World No 1 Dustin Johnson made the cut for the first time in three appearances on Hilton Head Island, firing a second straight 69 which included a remarkable par save on the seventh when he came within inches of holing a left-handed chip from next to a tree.

"Confidence is definitely there from a perspective of feeling like I can be more aggressive right now", Poulter said. He was the talk of golf two weeks back with his stunning playoff win at Houston Open where he made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff, then beat Beau Hossler on the first extra hole to gain entrance to Augusta National.

Second-round leader Bryson DeChambeau had the confident stride of a pending victor with his first solo 36-hole lead as a pro - at least until the third round got going.

"All things considered, the course is probably as easy as I've ever seen it play", Sabbatini said. "And when you're in that position, sometimes the game feels easy when sometimes it isn't".

The leaderboard is a nice mix of notable names and unheralded contenders with most of the sport's top-ranked players taking a little break after the Masters. "I have a great feel around the greens and I feel really confident around the greens".
