CWG 2018 Athletics Neeraj Chopra wins Javelin gold Jinson breaks 1,500 metres national record

The 20-year-old World junior record holder thereafter touched a season's best of 86.47m and became India's fourth individual gold victor in Commonwealth Games history in track and field.

Though the former junior world champion and Asian title victor was happy after achieving the feat, the 20-year-old was not satisfied with his performance.

It didn't matter that Chopra's javelin could only travel a distance of 86.47m in the final on Saturday, 0.1m shorter than his career best.

"I've tried to enjoy myself here and not focus on any negatives, like "I don't like this and I don't like that".

Neeraj was favourite for gold after his 85.94m throw last month at Patiala during the Federation Cup National Championships.

Hello and welcome to the live commentary from the Day 10 of the Commonwealth Games 2018 from Gold Coast.

For celebration, Neeraj had his friend Vinesh Phogat at the stands before the wrestler went to the adjacent Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre to win a gold medal. "It was still quite tough but I was very sure of myself", Neeraj said. This was India's first gold medal in javelin throw at Commonwealth Games, but fourth track and field gold after Milkha Singh, Krishna Poonia and Vikas Gowda. In August 2017, he won a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar with a sensational mark of 85.23m. "You definitely get distracted by that", added Chopra.

In the men's 4x400m relay, the Indian team had to pull out midway through the race after Amoj Jacob pulled a hamstring.

However, there was heartbreak for 2014 Glasgow bronze medallist triple jumper Arpinder Singh who missed the podium this time, finishing an agonising fourth. The Punjab athlete registered a best attempt of 16.46m to finish fourth.

Neeraj is getting a pat on his back from all across the globe for clinching gold in the CWG debut as well as taking place for himself among the elite Indian athletes who won a gold medal.
