GOLDOC has released a statement today apologising for a major planning error.

The network stoked anger among viewers with an attack on the Games organising committee and host broadcaster after a torrent of Twitter abuse throughout last night's event.

"GOLDOC appreciates that this decision therefore did not provide the opportunity for the television audiences to share this moment".

Many athletes and fans left the closing ceremonies early, according to reports.

However GOLDOC had an explanation. Koch said the athletes "are the star of the show".

These specific aspects would likely include the fact that, while plenty of Aussie musical talent was on display, the actual athletes were left in the dark.

Speaking on Sunrise, Peter Beattie copped to the ill-fated decision not to film athletes entering the closing ceremony, which lead to viewers and Channel 7's own commentators savaging the event.

"They're actually wrecking a tradition that is so important and part of the Commonwealth Games", Griggs said, live on air.

The broadcast of the ceremony was pretty conspicuously missing the usual footage of athletes and flagbearers entering the stadium, which meant we didn't get to see wheelchair racing gold medallist Kurt Fearnley carry the Australian flag for the last time before retiring.

India's highest-ever haul came at home when it hosted the Games in 2010 in New Delhi, with the Indian athletes crossing the century mark.

Hosts Australia, were the overall winners at this year's games after amassing 80 gold, 59 silver, 59 bronze to bring their medals total to 198.

Channel Seven's Johanna Griggs, who was co-hosting the ceremonies, ripped the organizers' decision while on-camera. "Again, we got that wrong", Beattie tweeted.

Many told the ABC outside the stadium that there had been too many empty seats during the ceremony. "I am not interested in blaming anyone else".

Canadian flag-bearer Erica Wiebe was positive on social media.

Nigeria finished the games with nine gold, nine silver and six bronze medals, a step down for Team Nigeria who finished eighth at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games with 36 medals. We missed out on all of that.

"I would have liked to see more of the athletes but other than that, I think they did a really great job", she said.

A satisfied Quadri said: "Not the result that I wanted but I am still very satisfied with my performance and silver is better than bronze".
