House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., did not have his thoughts collected when he faced the cameras after telling Republican colleagues he would not seek re-election to Congress in November.

After 20 years in Congress, Ryan noted, he wants to spend more time with his wife and three teenage children.

The announcement of the retirement by the Speaker of the House, one of Washington's most powerful positions, certainly does not help growing political anxiety amongst Republicans.

Was his retirement influenced by the way Trump changed the party? "I have no regrets whatsoever for having accepted this responsibility".

"Although Speaker Ryan leaves big shoes to fill, I am confident a strong leader will emerge and continue the effort to reform Washington and keep our nation great", August said.

Axios news site first reported the news on Wednesday. Ryan had more trust with the hardliners in the House.

But Ryan ultimately had to wrestle with another unexpected challenge: Trump, a president with little of Ryan's interest in policy detail or ideological purity. "Not only on who is the speaker but who's going to be minority leader". Ryan has been "a steady force in contrast to the president's more mercurial tone", said Rep. Mark Sanford of SC.

Ryan on Sunday again stressed his focus on his family.

Meadows said numerous decisions will come down to whether Republicans are still in control of the House after the election in November.

"Paul Ryan is an institution here in Janesville and also in the 1st Congressional District". And so Ryan, the highest GOP officeholder in the land and the party's 2012 vice presidential nominee, delivered the Republican establishment to Trump. He has had more trust with the hardliners in the House. "His ability to bridge the vast divide". A leadership contest, most likely featuring Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California and Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, will soon ensue unless the latter decides to defer to the former's seniority.

There has been speculation that Mr Ryan could have his eye on arun for the White House in 2020 or beyond.

Making a specific reference to her Russia-based cousin, Viktoria, she said that "her opinions and assertions are not mine and they are not my father's".

Between the obstinance of the knuckle-draggers in the so-called Freedom Caucus and the unpredictable, weird world of President Trump, it is easy to confuse Ryan as part of the problem. You never stop running.

As the House GOP's top fundraiser, Ryan's lame-duck status could send shockwaves through donor circles that are relying on his leadership at the helm of the House majority.

"This is going to be a challenging year", Pennsylvania Rep. Charlie Dent said.

"It's like Eisenhower resigning right before D-Day", said Tom Davis, a former Republican congressman from Virginia who once headed the House GOP's campaign committee.

The answer lies paradoxically in Ryan's idealism, rooted in his youthful fascination with the philosophy of Ayn Rand.

In Wisconsin, Republicans had no obvious successor in waiting.

On Friday, the state's Assembly Speaker Robin Vos announced he would pass on the opportunity to campaign for Ryan's seat.

Some potential Republican contenders for his seat include Wisconsin state Assembly Speaker Ryan Vos and Bryan Steil, a member of the Board of Regents, according to Wisconsin Republican sources.

Democrat Randy Bryce, an ironworker who has cultivated the "IronStache" moniker, had been Ryan's best-known challenger, drawing liberal support from around the country. That includes $2.1 million in the first quarter of 2018.

The only declared Republicans so far are white supremacist Paul Nehlen, who was banned from Twitter earlier this year for a series of posts criticized as racist and anti-Semitic, and Nick Polce, an Army veteran who co-owns a security-consulting firm. Ryan sat down with "CBS This Morning" co-anchor Gayle King just one day after he announced that he would be retiring from Congress in January, to share just went into his decision to leave.
