Astronomers Say an Asteroid Snuck Up on Us and Almost Hit Earth Yesterday

An asteroid the size of a football field buzzed by Earth Sunday in one of the closest encounters the planet has seen in a while.

NASA tracks asteroids that make close approaches to Earth, providing data on the distance and estimated diameter of each object.

Now recently NASA had released a chart of NEOs that are in a position to pass the earth in future using the CNEOs software. The asteroid - named 2018 GE3, came closest to Earth at around 12:11 pm IST (2:41 am EDT) on Sunday, as reported by space.com. Those asteroids, however, pose no threat to Earth.

Just a day after being discovered dangerously close and approaching Earth, an asteroid, potentially capable of causing significant damage, has darted past our planet almost missing it on an astronomical scale.

Had the object, first observed at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona on Saturday, moving at a speed of some 66,174 miles per hour (106,497 km/h), hit the Earth, its impact would be hard to imagine. Some hours later, Spaceweather.com reported that an amateur astronomer Michael Jager of Weibenkirchen Austria has posted the video of the asteroid that was recorded when asteroid fly past through the southern constellation Serpens. Around 1500 people of Chelyabinsk in Russian Federation ware admitted to the hospital for minor injuries that caused by shuttered glass pieces when a medium-sized asteroid that exploded over the city in 2013.

If asteroid 2018 GE3 had hit Earth, a great portion of the space rock might have disintegrated.

More than 1600 people were injured in the blast mostly due to broken glass. This sized Astroid may make some regional damage according to its speed, angle and impact location. At least three other small space rocks are set to fly past Earth on Tuesday - with the largest measuring 111 feet around.
