US wants UN vote Tuesday on Syria gas attack inquiry

US, Russia trade angry charges at UN over suspected poison gas attack in Syria

The 15-member council failed on Tuesday to approve three draft resolutions on chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

It could be argued a strike is being carried out in support UN Security Council resolutions, as was the case in 1998 when a United States and British bombing campaign hit Iraqi weapons research and storage facilities to retaliate for the Iraqi government's refusal to cooperate fully with UN weapons inspectors.

The nation is threatening to use its veto power at the United Nations Security Council to prevent an investigation into the attack by Bashar al-Assad's regime on Douma, a besieged town in eastern Ghouta that killed up to 80 people and injured hundreds more.

As tensions escalate over attainable US -led military reprisals for the suspected assault, the U.N.'s strongest physique remained paralyzed, unable to beat its deep divisions which have confirmed in the middle of the seven years of battle in Syria.

Nikki Haley, United States Ambassador to the United Nations, combs her hair before the start of a Security Council meeting, Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at U.N. headquarters.

The vote was 12 in favor, with Bolivia joining Russian Federation in voting "no" and China abstaining. Haley said the draft resolution was not impartial or independent since it would allow Russian Federation to veto investigators and staff for the new body - and to block its findings.

"History will record that, on this day, Russian Federation chose protecting a monster over the lives of the Syrian people", said U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley in reference to the Assad regime.

"You don't want to take heed to the reality that no traces of a chemical assault had been current in Douma", Nebenzia talked about. The only other country joining Russian Federation against the resolution was Bolivia, while China abstained.

Earlier the president's new national security adviser, John Bolton, urged President Donald Trump to skip his trip to South America this week because of the ongoing crisis in Syria.

The United States, Britain and France have argued the incident bears all the hallmarks of a strike ordered by the regime of Russia's ally Assad, which has been blamed for previous attacks by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said there was no threat of the situation in Syria resulting in a military clash between Russia and the United States. She said her delegation had conducted transparent negotiations when drafting the resolution and had gone the extra mile in incorporating the views of the Russian Federation. "Whenever we propose anything meaningful on Syria, Russia vetoes it".

"The team is preparing to deploy to Syria shortly", it said in a statement. A US Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, is in the Mediterranean.

Global chemical weapons experts will go Douma to investigate the suspected poison gas attack, their organization said on Tuesday, as the United States and other Western powers consider military action over the incident.

Despite the worldwide revulsion over chemical weapons attacks, the death toll from such incidents in Syria is only a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of combatants and civilians killed since the war began in 2011.
