Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro will go on sale at 12 pm on Wednesday, but there's a catch. The e-commerce site is already displaying a banner on its homepage that suggests the Redmi 5 will be an Amazon-exclusive device.

Xiaomi is gaining momentum in the Android smartphone segment as the leading manufacturer but the company still lags behind when it comes to rolling out new updates. For those unaware, this is the same handset that the company launched in China previous year in December in three storage variants - 2GB+16GB, 3GB + 32GB and 4GB+32GB.

Redmi 5 will be Xiaomi's successor to last year's Redmi 4, which was launched at a starting price of Rs 6,999 going up all the way to Rs 10,999.

This will put the pricing for the upcoming smartphone under Rs. 9,999, but we just have to wait a few hours to find out the final pricing for the variants headed to India. Today's launch event will be livestreamed on the official Xiaomi India website and also on the company's YouTube channel.

The device is backed by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core SoC paired with 2GB/3GB/4GB RAM options, however the Indian market will most probably get the 2GB RAM + 16GB storage and 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variants. It runs on Android Nougat-based Xiaomi's own MIUI 9 layer, offering major customizations to users. Again the onboard storage is expandable via microSD card. The phone comes in three variants, 2GB RAM +16GB storage, 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and a 4GB RAM variant with 32GB storage. In terms of camera, the phone has a 12MP rear camera coupled with 5MP front camera. The dual camera also have EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation) and LED flash. The front-snapper also features the company's proprietary Beautify 3.0. Fueling the smartphone is a 4,000mAh battery.
