Dennis Alexander a teacher at Seaside High School in California accidentally fired a gun inside a classroom injuring a student

Dennis Alexander a teacher at Seaside High School in California accidentally fired a gun inside a classroom injuring a student

Alexander is also a reserve police officer in nearby Sand City on Monterey Bay.

Alexander has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation has been launched.

Dennis Alexander allegedly fired the shot at about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday while teaching his Administration of Justice class.

Alexander's gun went off by a fluke.

Under California law, teachers are not permitted to be armed.

The teacher, who also served as a reserve police officer, has been identified as Dennis Alexander.

The district said in a statement that, " California law prohibits firearms on campus, and MPUSD's Board of Education policy prohibits any person other than authorized law enforcement or security personnel from possessing weapons, imitation firearms, or unsafe instruments of any kind in school buildings, on school grounds or buses, or at a school-related or school-sponsored activity away from school, or while going to or coming from school".

"I have concerns about why he was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom".

The two other students had minor injuries. But Fermin Gonzales, father of the boy injured in the neck, said he only became aware of what happened when his son returned home with blood on his shirt-so his parents took him to hospital for X-rays.

One 17-year-old boy suffered moderate injuries when fragments from the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and lodged into his neck. Pridgen said class resumed after the incident was brought under control. The family filed a police report.

Although Alexander is allowed to carry a weapon since he is a reserve police officer, the authorities don't know if he was granted permission to bring a firearm on campus.

"He's shaken up, but he's going to be OK", Gonzales told KSBW.

"I think a lot of questions are on parents' minds are, why a teacher would be pointing a loaded firearm at the ceiling in front of students", Diffenbaugh told KSBW. Today, during class, the teacher accidentally discharged his firearm during a lesson while it was pointed at the ceiling. Pieces of the ceiling fell to the floor. "It was determined that there was no immediate threat to students or staff, and school remained in session", the district said in a statement.

Due to the nature of this personnel incident, we are unable to share any other details. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the on-going investigation. One might even argue that he was "highly trained". In 2013, he was awarded Reserve Officer of the Year. Alexander is also a Seaside City Council member who teaches mathematics in Spanish.
