Southampton, who are the ninth Premier League club to change manager this term, are in their sixth straight season in the top flight and have not finished lower than 14th in that time.

Southampton dismissed Pellegrino yesterday after just one victory in 17 league games under the manager.

Robbie Savage spoke on BBC Radio 5Live on Monday evening and offered up former Stoke gaffer Mark Hughes as a prime candidate for the Southampton vacancy, and the ex-striker would certainly fit the bill of having plenty of English top tier experience.

It's probably very similar to last season, the club had become very accustomed under Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman of having a team very much on the front foot, creating lots of chances and scoring lots of goals, being in games and giving the big boys a run for their money.

Silva impressed many with his ultimately fruitless attempts to guide Hull City to Premier League safety a year ago and he made a good start at Watford this season until an approach from Everton soured his relations with the club.

Should Southampton try to hijack Silva's move? The first time it looked like they had not played for him and they let him down.

"That's life, that's football, those decisions were made with the best intentions and it didn't turn out right", Le Tissier said.

He has also managed Wales, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers Fulham and Queens Park Rangers - and is behind only Arsène Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson, Harry Redknapp, David Moyes and Sam Allardye on the list of most Premier League games.

Southampton may have to move fast if they wish to appoint Marco Silva as manager.

"Yes, you can lay the blame at the manager's door at how the team has played and been set but, but at the end of the day the players out on the football pitch have got to do the business".
