Salma Hayek: How Could They Turn Frida Kahlo Into a Barbie?

Salma has criticised Mattel for losing Kahlo’s ‘uniqueness’ in the Barbie doll

Salma Hayek is not impressed with the new Frida Kahlo Barbie

Critics complain the doll doesn't reflect Kahlo's heavy, almost conjoined eyebrows, and they say its costume doesn't accurately portray the elaborate Tehuana-style dresses that the artist wore.

In the post, she says, "Frida Kahlo never tried to be or look like anyone else".

Critics, including Romeo, have taken issue with the doll's appearance, arguing that it doesn't accurately depict Kahlo's long, dark eyebrows nor her vibrant wardrobe.

Romeo's lawyer Pablo Sangri said the family established the Frida Kahlo Corporation in partnership with another company called Casablanca Distributors in 2005.

For International Women's Day this year, Barbie celebrated impactful female role models with created 17 realistic-looking dolls, including Kahlo, mathematician Katherine Johnson, and aviator Amelia Earhart.

That is, it's more Barbie-like than Frida-like.

He took a more measured tone in the Oval Office on Monday , saying that he didn't think there would be a trade war. The president's claim of a massive trade deficit with Canada is dubious. "We have had a bad deal with Mexico ".

Critics have complained that the doll does not reflect Kahlo's heavy, almost conjoined eyebrows or unibrow, and they say its costume does not accurately portray the elaborate Tehuana-style dresses the artist wore. The corporation, which now operates separately from the Kahlo family, said Mattel received rights from the painter's niece, Isolda Pinedo Kahlo, who died in 2007.

Salma Hayek, who was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Kahlo in 2002's "Frida", chimed in on Instagram Sunday, blasting the doll for going against everything Kahlo stood for. She celebrated her uniqueness.

This is not the first time that the commercial activities of the Frida Kahlo Corporation are said to have angered some of Kahlo's descendants. Fans of the painter have also criticized the fact that the doll doesn't appear to have any signs of polio, a disease that incapacitated her for most of her life, or the life-long injuries that were caused by a bus crash in 1925.

She may not have approved of being cast as a variety of Barbie, the best-selling doll whose image Mattel has updated so as to address criticism that in body type and lifestyle it had perpetuated damaging stereotypes about women.

"[The corporation] celebrates the ideological contributions of Frida Kahlo which have transcended the borders of art and which will influence new generations as a world icon through the Frida Kahlo Barbie, which conserves the essence of Barbie and the legacy of Frida Kahlo".
