Stephen Hawking Dead: Scientist Dies at Age 76

British scientist and theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking attends a launch event for a new award for science communication called the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication in London

Stephen Hawking, who has died aged 76, was Britain's most famous modern day scientist, a genius who dedicated his life to unlocking the secrets of the Universe.

In a statement, Professor Hawking's children, Lucy, Robert and Tim said: "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today". His courage and persistance with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.

"Stephen once said, 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.' We will miss him forever".

Known the world over for his acclaimed book "A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes", Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - a progressive neuro-degenerative disease - in 1963 at age 21.

Professor Stephen Hawking appeared via hologram to address an audience at the Sydney Opera House in April 2015.

His 1988 book "A Brief History of Time" sought to explain to non-scientists the fundamental theories of the universe and it became an worldwide bestseller, bringing him global acclaim. His major scientific work was also to discover that black holes are not entirely black while they emit radiation and they will eventually evaporate and disappear. Still, Hawking progressively lost use of most of his muscles, and for the last three decades of his life was communicating nearly exclusively through a voice synthesizer.

One of Hawking's former students at Cambridge, theoretical physicist Raphael Bousso, told Nature that his teacher was a brilliant physicist who also excelled at communicating science to the public.

Hawking was born on Januart 8, 1942 in Oxford, England.

Hawking became a hero to math and science geeks and pop culture figure, guest-starring as himself on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "The Simpsons".

Fellow scientists praised Hawking for his contribution to physics.

In May last year, Hawking warned that humans should leave earth within 100 years if we wanted to survive.

"His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake", said Neil deGrasse Tyson. Hawking authored seven books, co-authored nine others, and was the recipient of dozens of scientific, academic, and other awards including The Albert Einstein Award, The Hughes Medal, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. "Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure".

The US space agency tweeted: "Remembering Stephen Hawking, a renowned physicist and ambassador of science".

At a talk, Professor Hawking gave a one-hour whirlwind history of man's understanding of the origin of the universe from primordial creation myths to the most cutting edge predictions made by "M-theory". "We have lost an wonderful human being".
