Islamic Jihad

The explosion came a few hundred metres (yards) after Hamdallah´s convoy crossed through the Palestinian Authority-run checkpoint into Hamas-controlled territory.

According to witnesses, a passenger on a motorbike threw an explosive device at the last vehicle in the prime minister's convoy shortly after it entered Gaza through the Erez Crossing with Israel on Monday morning.

Neither Hamdallah nor Faraj were among those injured in the incident, and the Prime Minister continued his schedule as planned.

While President Mahmoud Abbas blamed Hamas for the blast, his security chief Majed Farraj, who was in the convoy, said it was "too early" to say who was responsible.

This is a developing story.

His Fatah party said it holds Hamas responsible for the explosion.

The top Palestinian Authority officials made the rare trip from the West Bank for the inauguration of a desalination plant. Hamas' takeover of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority in 2007 and the ensuing Israeli-Egyptian blockade, power shortages and conflicts delayed the opening of the project for four years.

Hamdallah appeared on television shortly after the explosion as he opened a wastewater treatment plant in the territory, but left shortly after - cutting short his visit, a source in his delegation said.

The rival factions have been trying to reconcile since 2007 when Hamas seized control of Gaza from Fatah forces and have suffered several setbacks in their efforts since.

Hamdallah's government is recognised by the worldwide community, while Hamas is blacklisted as a terrorist organisation by the European Union and the United States. "We will continue to work diligently to complete our government projects in the Gaza Strip", the PM declared.
