Released safety Tyrann "The Honey Badger" Mathieu would be a ideal fit with the Patriots, who are in desperate need of an upgrade in the secondary.

Mathieu started all 16 games last season, and will likely generate a lot of interest from the 31 other National Football League teams.

The team made it official with a tweet and a short news release.

Regardless of the money freed up by the team waiving Mathieu, who would have been the fourth most expensive player under contract for 2018, Arizona fans posted their disappointment, shock and anger after the decision that general manager Steve Keim called "part of the business".

Mathieu, 25, has been a real asset to the Cardinals' defense over the last few years. That was really the only stipulation Mathieu had for his next team when he was asked about it in a text message from MMQB's Albert Breer. So with the big news out of Arizona being that Mathieu is all of a sudden available, here are five potential landing spots for the defensive back.

However the Cardinals have continued to possess enormous positional talent, a fact that's been disguised by their 7-9 and 8-8 records over the last two seasons. However, they obviously weren't positive enough as the Cardinals have announced that they've cut the Honey Badger. Mathieu's 2015 knee injury derailed the best season of his career. He suffered a torn ACL in December 2015 and landed on injured reserve a year later after dealing with a lingering shoulder problem. The New York Giants are considered a team to "keep an eye on" as the Honey Badger tests the free agent market, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He's coming off another strong season in 2017 as he had two interceptions and a forced fumble in 16 games, the first time he's played a full season in his career.
