Miley Cyrus could end up being hundreds of millions of dollars poorer all thanks to a recent lawsuit.

The suit says at the time Cyrus released her song, she had reinvented herself as "edgy" and her new music had traces and hints of urban or Caribbean sound.

Michael May, who had a Jamaican hit single in 1988 under the name Flourgon, said his "We Run Things" has been misappropriated for Miley's hit single, claiming half the song is stolen.

The suit claims Miley's lyrics "We run things / Things don't run we" were adapted from May's song "We Run Things" which contains the line "We run things / Things no run we". He has accused Cyrus of exploiting his his "unique and creative lyrical phraseology in order to establish an overarching and pervasive theme ... in the realm of self-discovery and self-governing". In translation, Flourgon thinks Miley's pronouncement of not being able to stop is equivalent to saying that he runs things.

The song at the heart of the lawsuit is called We Run Things, according to TMZ.

May said he sought to protect his work a year ago with the U.S. Copyright Office, and in November won "formal copyright protection" for all musical arrangements in "We Run Things".

Representatives for Cyrus, 25, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It was the lead single from her 2013 album Bangerz. The two songs weren't that similar musically, but Thicke had taken inspiration from Gaye, and that was apparently enough for the jury. He's filed a complaint with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
