Hit-and-run driver tried to get away — then a man took out a sledge hammer, video shows | Miami Herald

Then, a man wearing a dark shirt, khaki cargo shorts and black shoes with white socks gets out of a vehicle and uses a sledgehammer or mallet to smash the SUV's windows.

"You were arrested for fleeing and eluding a police officer", Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer said to Lagutenko in bond court.

Maxwell Lagutenko, 25, was later charged in the crash that happened near Northeast 34th Street.

Cellphone video captured a chaotic scene after a silver Infinity SUV crashed into several cars Sunday morning in Miami then attempted to flee the scene, WPLG reports.

After the attack, the SUV can be seen driving away.

Witnesses said the driver crossed over a median in Miami and drove into oncoming traffic, hitting three cars before coming to a stop.

Not long after, a police officer tried to pull the vehicle over because the driver was driving recklessly and he or she noticed the damage.

The video shows the witnesses yelling at the driver to stop, pounding on his auto and trying to open the doors. Anthony Jimenez said "That is insane". They attempt to pull the man from his vehicle, and one even screams, "Don't move".

"I'll call the cops and I'll try to chase him down", he said.

The driver of the SUV, whose name was not released, was found and taken into custody.

The arrest report said Lagutenko seemed to be under the influence of drugs.

The men were intent on detaining the driver because he is accused of causing this wreck, involving several vehicles.

Police also urged people not to take the law into their own hands.
