Who deserves credit for summit?

There are positive changes emerging on North Korea, according to China's top diplomat

Trump last week accepted the invitation to meet with Kim by the end of May following months of heightened tensions and exchanges of frequent military threats between the two leaders.

Mr Pompeo and Mr Mnuchin said the United States would make no concessions and would keep the pressure on North Korea by maintaining economic sanctions and a strong USA defense posture before the meeting.

According to the Blue House, Abe also dismissed some concerns that Kim is trying to buy time with the summits to advance his nuclear and missile technologies.

Many Democrats as well as Mr Trump's fellow Republicans said the USA should have demanded concessions before granting North Korea a meeting.

Japanese and North Korean leaders have not met since May 2004, when then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met Kim's father Kim Jong Il in North Korea. Kim also extended an invitation to Trump for a bilateral summit to discuss denuclearization, which Chung delivered to the White House last week.

Kim, repeatedly derided as "Little Rocket Man" by Trump, was "very aware" of his image, the official said, and reacted to comments made about him in a "relaxed" manner by joking about himself from time to time. He pledged strong cooperation with the South and the United States to resolve those issues.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted again, saying, "North Korea has not conducted a Missile Test since November 28, 2017, and has promised not to do so through our meetings". Tokyo, however, suspects that there are more victims. "Through those talks, we need to get the North to take concrete action".

If negotiations follow a Trump-Xi summit, China will likely seek to participate, rather than leave the deliberations to the United States and the two Koreas. The administration officials credited toughened economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations, and pushed by the U.S., with helping bring Kim to the brink of negotiations.
