Google's new doodle marks 30th anniversary of Pi Day

A video that accompanied the Google doodle Wednesday features Ansel explaining how he made the pie, the doodle and the science of baking.

Google has dedicated a doodle to mark 30 years of "Pi Day", a day first recognised by physicist Larry Shaw in 1988 to honour the mathematical constant.

It is believed that physicist Larry Shaw was the first to celebrate the day at the Exploratorium in San Francisco with his peers and staff nearly 30 years ago.

The value of pi is 22/7 and today even school children use the value to calculate the circumference and area of a circle by substituting the value of pi in the formulas.

Pi Day is celebrated every year March 14 as the first three digits of pi are three, one and four, representing the date.

According to, Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point.

Pi (Greek letter "π") is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is approximately 3.14159. It's an annual celebration of the mathematical constant, π. Because its most elementary definition relates to the circle, pi is found in many formulae in trigonometry and geometry, especially those concerning circles, ellipses, and spheres. Therefore, it is an irrational number which is less than infinity. With people all over celebrating today, NASA too has invited the public to celebrate Pi Day (March 14) by organising a "Pi in the Sky" challenge.

Pi is a fundamental element of many mathematical fields, but most significantly Geometry.
