Gallant Kenya finishes second in Vancouver 7s

HSBC Canada Sevens

Kenya Sevens Rugby team on Monday lost 31-12 to Fiji in the final of the Vancouver Sevens in Canada.

"I'm speechless, really proud of the boys", Fiji captain Jerry Tuwai said.

Coming back off the break with a five point deficit, Shujaa went up ahead just 17 seconds in through Eden Agero who dotted down and converted, but it was short-lived as Fiji re-took the lead to head 19-14 up.

Fiji had it well in hand when Ambaka went flying down the left wing apparently set to give Kenya a final try only for Tuwai to wrap him up.

"We are the first team to win two tournaments this year but that will only make the other teams much harder to play against".

Fiji had edged South Africa 15-12 in the semi-finals courtesy of second-half tries from Kalione Nasoko and Amenoni Nasilasila.

Kenya opened the scoring after two minutes with a try to Willy Ambaka, the 99th of his World Series career. Again, Fiji claimed the kickoff and this time Mocenacagi broke into the open field and dashed nearly 50 meters to again restore parity. Paula Dranisinukula then showed his strength by defying three tacklers to score Fiji's last try.

Their reward is a quarterfinal match up against world series leaders South Africa, who suffered a loss to second-ranked New Zealand to finish second in their pool.

South Africa retains the lead in the World Series after six of 10 rounds.

New Zealand will now play-off for seventh place against Argentina.
