Trump's statements about McCabe put pressure on Sessions to fire him, and would create an appearance of impropriety even if Sessions' decision to fire McCabe were backed by a formal recommendation.

The review is looking into McCabe's 2016 decision to allow FBI officials to speak to reporters about an investigation into the Clinton Foundation, according to the New York Times.

Mr. Sessions would be able to point to a critical inspector general's report and say he followed Justice Department protocol. "That yet-to-be-released report triggered an F.B.I. disciplinary process that recommended his termination - leaving Mr. Sessions to either accept or reverse that decision".

McCabe, 49, had always been expected to retire on March 18 though he abruptly left his post earlier this year after his boss, FBI Director Christopher Wray, was told of what the inspector general had found. President Donald Trump has long made McCabe a particular target of his ire, and the recommendation to fire the former No. 2 Federal Bureau of Investigation official could give him new ammunition. "We have no personnel announcements at this time".

The Justice Department's inspector general said that McCabe had not been forthcoming during the review, though details about what the official failed to say were not clear.

Reporters had been chasing down leads about McCabe's fate in the past few days as he approached his official retirement date.

A Justice Department representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He had attacked McCabe on the campaign trail, too, following the revelation that his wife had accepted campaign contributions from the political action committee of then-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a close Clinton ally, during a failed state Senate run.

The Wall Street Journal story was written by Devlin Barrett, who is now a reporter at The Washington Post.

McCabe's tenure became entangled in politically charged controversies, including the investigation into Clinton's private email and the continuing criminal probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

McCabe declined to comment, but his friends told the Times that he denies any wrongdoing.

McCabe and his attorney recently signed nondisclosure agreements that allowed them to read the results of the investigation but banned them from discussing its contents.
