Seven dead, over a dozen injured in explosion in Raiwind

Suicide blast claims six lives in Raiwind, leaves 20 injured

The area deputy inspector general police, Haider Ashraf, told reporters a religious congregation of about 60,000 people was underway in the Raiwind area and the bomber on a motorbike meant to attack the worshipers. It is being suspected that the attack was targeted towards the police. Ashraf added that body parts of the bomber have been retrieved from the site and an investigation is under way.

The police camp was set up for the security of an ongoing congregation of Tableeghi Jamaat. "The police appear to be the target", he said, reports Express News.

The nature of the blast was not immediately clear. The injured have been rushed to the nearby hospital. However, rescuers say it was a cylinder blast.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and expressed his grief with families of injured and killed, stating fearless police officials lay down their lives in line of duty.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
