US Soccer presidential election results: Cordeiro beats Carter to replace Gulati

In the wake of Carlos Cordeiro's election as U.S. Soccer Federation president, Hope Solo has said she is "very disappointed" in the Athlete Council that helped propel him to victory, adding that the group failed many of its constituents in America. Cordeiro is literally part of the establishment, a member of the U.S. Soccer board since 2007 and vice president since 2016, but has positioned himself as a reform candidate with the necessary experience to bring about change. Cordeiro pulled away from Kathy Carter, who is on leave as president of Major League Soccer's marketing arm.

Cordeiro received just 36.3 percent of the vote during the first round of voting, but then received 41.8 percent in the second round and finally 68.6 percent in the third and final round.

Gulati decided not to seek re-election after the USA men's national team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after a surprise loss to Trinidad and Tobago on the final day of CONCACAF qualifying. All three of them are extreme long-shots though - of the eight candidates, only Carter, Cordeiro, Martino, and Wynalda are expected to gain the kind of support to have a real chance to win once the election process begins.

Cordeiro replaces Gulati, who served in the role for 12 years.

Trump responds to article on USA intel operation: 'Drain the swamp'
Desperate to retrieve the valuable NSA tools, USA intelligence worked with with said Russian via an American businessman in Germany, the report states.

He has been treasurer, chaired the budget committee, and been director of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. One of Cordeiro's first orders of business will be finding a replacement. Solo said Carter refused to furnish US senators with a breakdown of breakdown of revenue for the men's and women's national teams she refused. He was previously vice president of the federation, which governs the sport in the USA and oversees the American national soccer teams.

The US is also bidding to co-host the 2026 World Cup along with Mexico and Canada.

Carter's support among delegates attending USSF's annual general meeting slipped each round - from 34.6 percent to 33.3 on the second ballot, to 10.6 on the third, when the field had shrunk to five. He first took the top U.S. Soccer job in 2006.

Among those in the running were former men's national team players Eric Wynalda, Kyle Martino and Paul Caligiuri and ex-women's national team goalkeeper Hope Solo. "I think we have an opportunity to really transform it into a number one sport".
