The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Quad-City area beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing until 6 p.m., Saturday as a band of snow is expected to develop and spread into parts of eastern Iowa and far northwestern IL by late this afternoon.

Weather service forecasters warn of heavy snow, reduced visibility and hard travel conditions, including during the morning commute Friday. Snow will fall at its heaviest at night with lighter accumulations expected through Friday morning.

Now the axis of heaviest snow (4-8 inches and up to 10 inches in some localized areas) is expected to occur generally along and north of an Iowa City to Davenport, and to a Princeton, Illinois.

The storm's first snow blitz hit the Great Lakes and northern High Plains on Friday.

The bulk of the cancellations were concentrated at three airports: Chicago O'Hare, Chicago Midway and Detroit.

Travelers checking in at Tokyo's Narita Airport got this warning for flights bound to Chicago on February 9, 2018. "Recent forecast models are showing the potential for 4" to 8" of snow for northern Newton and Jasper counties. Since 1884, the city has had only nine days when 12 or more inches of snow fell.

Almost 1,000 flights were delayed and another 1,500 canceled at Detroit and Chicago airports. "We've had about an inch in the Quad Cities already, but our overall total for Thursday night and Friday is going to be in the range of 2-5" in the Quad Cities.

About 280 heavy snow equipment operators were working on the airfields at Midway and O'Hare, said Sheridan, who warned travelers to give themselves extra time when heading to the airport.

The Windy City has not seen this much snow at one time since 2011, when a storm dumped about 20 inches of snow so quickly that drivers had to abandon their cars along a major road.

The last part of the area to clear Friday evening according to WGN looks to be Chicago south and east into northwest Indiana.
