The North and South, who are technically still at war, marched together under a unified flag at the opening ceremony and formed a women's hockey team for the Pyeongchang Games, the first time a unified Korean team has competed at an Olympics.

Speaking to the Washington Post aboard Air Force Two on his way home from the Winter Olympics in South Korea, Pence-who avoided any direct contact with North Korean officials attending the Games-said Washington would keep up its "maximum pressure campaign" against Pyongyang but would be open to possible talks at the same time. They were a huge hit.

"The point is, no pressure comes off until they are actually doing something that the alliance believes represents a meaningful step toward denuclearization", the Post quoted Pence as saying during an interview on his way back from South Korea.

They were at speedskating, too.

At the Olympic Stadium's VIP box, Kim Yo Jong and North Korea's nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam, took their place among dignitaries from around the world, including U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence who sat just a few feet (less than a meter) away and seemed to make an effort not to acknowledge them. The University of Kentucky cheer squad will represent the United States in Pyeongchang, performing at the closing ceremony and in a competition with other countries.

According to the Blue House, Kim Jong Un wanted to meet Moon "in the near future" and would like for him to visit North Korea "at his earliest convenience", his sister told Moon.

U.S. President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership traded insults and threats of nuclear war as tensions rose, with Trump repeatedly dismissing the prospect or value of talks with North Korea. The team plays Switzerland on Saturday.

Mr Moon was elected on a platform of better relations with the North and ultimately a push for a diplomatic end to the nuclear standoff.

Moon also encouraged the North Koreans to be more active in pursuing talks with the United States, saying that "early resumption of dialogue (between the two) is absolutely necessary for developments in the inter-Korean relations as well".

In December, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson offered to start talks with North Korea without pre-conditions, but the State Department later said there would first have to be a "period of calm" in which Pyongyang suspends testing before any negotiations could begin.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, also in South Korea for the Olympics, has said the United States and South Korea were closely aligned in their approach to dealing with North Korea.

Always flanked by thick groups of bodyguards, Kim Yo Jong commanded attention wherever she went, walking among throngs of journalists with a quiet poise and occasionally shooting an enigmatic smile at cameras. The previous meetings came after rounds of global talks aimed at eliminating the North's nuclear program, which eventually failed. Reviving inter-Korean dialogue is critical for the policies of Moon, who insists that Seoul should be in control in worldwide efforts to deal with the North Korean nuclear issue. North Korea has said it will never give up its nuclear deterrent and critics in the South see its participation in the Games as a reward for bad behaviour.

Analysts say that the missiles, which were successfully flight tested three times a year ago, could potentially reach deep into the USA mainland when perfected.

North Korea agreed to participate in Pyeongchang after Games host South Korea and the International Olympic Committee encouraged the reclusive, heavily sanctioned state to participate as a gesture of peace.
