PyeongChang organisers cyber-attacked during opening ceremony

The opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics was briefly interrupted Friday, after security had to remove US President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un from the stadium.

Members of the North Korean cheerleader squad sing and wave flags prior to the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Feb. 9, 2018.

In the front row of the grandstand, United States' Vice-President Mike Pence stood to wave and applaud the U.S. team as they made their circuit of the stadium.

She handed an invitation from her brother for the President of South Korea Moon Jae-in to visit him in Pyongyang.

"We hope that these Olympic Games will open a window of opportunity to allow for a strong diplomatic engagement aiming at the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", said Guterres.

The controversy was most visible in national politics, where conservatives criticized the North participation as unfair to the players from South.

His father and President Trump have both stated unequivocally that he was the victim of torture by Kim Jong Un's regime.

When athletes from North and South Korea entered together, the background music was the traditional folk song "Arirang". Mr Moon has previously said he will need reassurance from the North that it would help resolve the nuclear crisis.

North Korea state media on Friday confirmed the sacking of the country's military chief Hwang Pyong So, after Southern reports said he had been fired for corruption. "The families are well connected and intensely loyal to the Kim family regime".

But both South Korea and the USA has been cautious about the talks, saying there will not be progress without North Korea giving up nuclear weapons.

The first summit was in June 2000 between Kim Dae-jung, a proponent of the so-called Sunshine Policy, and Kim Jong Il.

Turns out it wasn't a secret plan for the newly unified Korean women's hockey team to beat Switzerland.

Asked about criticism that Pence stood and cheered only for Team USA and stayed seated when the North and South Koreans marched in under a unified flag, the official was unapologetic.

"We will not allow North Korea to hide behind the Olympic banner the reality that they enslave their people and threaten the wider region".
