Mazdzer competed in the 2014 Sochi Games and the 2010 Vancouver Games but did not win a medal.

On the fourth and final run, Loch did what he had never done before in the Olympic Games - he had a disastrous run. "I'm an outsider. I like being the underdog". He shot out of the starting gate and barreled down the course, sliding flawlessly down the hill.

Mazdzer, who describes himself as a goofball who knows how to flip the switch to serious when he needs, beamed after crossing the finish line.

He finished in fourth place after two runs, finishing one one-thousandth outside of the top contenders. Tucker West finished 26th and Taylor Morris finished 18th.

But he dropped out of the medals to gift American Chris Mazdzer the silver and German Johannes Ludwig the bronze. Gleirscher's win was Austria's first in men's luge in 50 years.
