Nepal Leader KP Sharma Oli to Take over As Prime Minister

Oli to be sworn in as 41st PM of Nepal today

Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has resigned to pave the way for the formation of new government as per the people's mandate in recent elections.

The veteran Nepalese politician became Nepal's prime minister for the fourth time in May past year after the main opposition party chose to end the obstruction of parliament.

In the elections held in November and December, the CPN (UML) and its ally, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist-Centre) or CPN (M-C), won 121 and 53 seats respectively in the lower house, made up of 275 seats.

The Communist leader is expected to take the oath of office later today, presidential secretary Bhesh Raj Adhikari said. He was the Prime Minister from October 11, 2015 to August 4, 2016.

Rules under the new constitution make it harder to oust the prime minister, raising hopes that the next government could last a full five-year term. Deuba's Nepali Congress finished third in the race. The NC was behind the CPN-UML and the CPN (Maoist Centre), winning just 23 seats out of a total 165 seats under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system.

The largest alliance in Parliament, the left alliance, formally extended support to KP Sharma Oli for premiership and presented the same claim before President Bidhya Devi Bhandari at 9:00 AM on Thursday.

Prachanda's Maoist Centre and UML are set to merge soon.
