"I expect Pyongyang and Seoul to get closer in the hearts of our (Korean) people and the future of unification and prosperity will be advanced", Ms Kim Yo Jong wrote in her Korean-language entry to the guest book.

Seoul's presidential office says Moon during the luncheon proposed a toast calling for peace and "mutual prosperity" for the two Koreas.

American skaters Lana Gehring and Maame Biney enjoyed the presence of the North Korean supporters.

He also did not shake hands with Kim Yong Nam while making a brief appearance at a leaders' reception ahead of the ceremony - although Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose country is also regularly threatened by Pyongyang, did so, while exchanging pleasantries with the North Korean.

Kim is an honorary ambassador of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the 2010 Winter Olympics women's figure skating gold medalist. Instead, he'd be treating the occasion as work, a chance to send a message to North Korea that the time for "strategic patience" is over.

It was the USA that appeared to be the one left in the cold, especially after the sister of the North Korean dictator extended an invitation from her brother for Moon to visit the North. In wide shots of the stadium, the lights created images like snowflakes and the flags of each country as the teams stepped out during the Parade of Nations.

Warmbier said that even though North Korea had formed a "unified" team with South Korea, its athletes were not truly demonstrating Olympic spirit. US Vice-President Mike Pence, sitting a few seats away in the same Opening Ceremony VIP booth, looked stony faced as the scene unfolded.

Pence told the defectors that it was important that the truth about North Korea is known during the Olympic Games.

Kim Yo Jong, who is believed to be about 30, has been rapidly rising within the North's power structure and is believed to be in charge of shaping her brother's public persona.

Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, verbally delivered the invite to Moon on Saturday. The rhetoric war between North Korea and the Trump administration hasn't skipped a beat in Pyeongchang.

The four senior DPRK delegates will have a meeting and lunch with President Moon on Saturday, according to South Korea's presidential Blue House.

Moon's desire to engage North Korea was in contrast to his United States ally. Olympic committee organizers said the origins of the attack remained unknown. "For three months, she nearly starved because the North Korean soldiers came and they took control of that area".

This item corrects that Kim Yo Jong is the leader's sister.

"This is the first time Mike Pence has been accused of being a snob", said an aide to the vice president, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the North Korean reports.

"The participants in the opening ceremony warmly encouraged the players of the north and the south who were marching together, holding the flag of the Korean peninsula bearing the Korean map".

It is not clear whether the talks will lead to a significant reduction in tensions.
