Larry Fitzgerald will return for the 2018 season, Cardinals say

Despite considering retirement, Larry Fitzgerald will return for his 15th season with the Arizona Cardinals.

It is official. After taking six weeks to decide his National Football League future, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will play in 2018. This past season, for example, he tied his own franchise record with 109 catches, and tallied 1,156 yards and six touchdowns.

Wilks said Fitzgerald called him Wednesday night to inform the first-year coach he is committed to the Cardinals despite the team having a hole at the quarterback position.

Fitzgerald, who turns 35 just in time for the start of the 2018 season, has racked up gaudy stats despite unfortunate quarterback circumstances for much of his career.

Matt Barkley, Blaine Gabbert and Drew Stanton are the lone quarterbacks on the roster of the Cardinals, who finished with an 8-8 mark last season.

"I'm excited about what the future holds", Fitzgerald said.

Head coach Steve Wilks broke the news Thursday morning on the "Doug & Wolf Show" on Arizona Sports. Fitzgerald enters 2018 third on the NFL's all-time receptions list and third all-time in receiving yards. Before then, we'll get at least one more season to marvel at his greatness on the field.

The third overall pick in the 2003 draft, Fitzgerald has made the Pro Bowl 11 times.

The 34-year-old Fitzgerald is the Cardinals' franchise leader in almost every statistical receiving category, including receptions, yards and touchdowns. Each of the last three seasons, he has caught more than 100 passes.

At the recent Super Bowl, Fitzgerald did sound optimistic about the new staff but would not commit to a return.

This will be Fitzgerald's 15th season.
