PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games: Opening Ceremony Welcomes Slightly Warmer Weather But Winds Could

Moon was all smiles as he greeted Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Kim Yong Nam, the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state, for lunch at the presidential residence.

"On a political level in Seoul, there is no wedge that can be driven between us by North Korea", Mattis said, echoing comments made by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.

The official added that Pence does not believe that the invitation dilutes the toughness of the United States pressure campaign on North Korea.

Kim Jong Un has invited Moon for talks in Pyongyang, South Korean officials said, setting the stage for the first meeting of Korean leaders in more than a decade.

The report also highlighted the joint entry by the two teams of the DPRK and South Korea into the stadium.

International Olympic Committee boss to visit North Korea after winter Games
The previous meetings came after rounds of global talks aimed at eliminating the North's nuclear program, which eventually failed. Pence did not interact with the North Koreans even though he was seated in the same box as them at Friday's opening ceremony.

Trump budget plan already outdated after budget deal
Chamber of Commerce has proposed hiking the federal gas tax, which hasn't gone up since 1993, to raise $394 billion over 10 years. Another $20 billion will go to "transformative programs", or infrastructure projects rooted in promoting new or innovative ideas.

The North hopes to win the South Korean public over by focusing on the idea of a united Korean people.

Ms Kim, 30, the regime's propaganda chief and an increasingly influential figure in North Korea, is the first member of Pyongyang's ruling dynasty to set foot in the South since the end of the Korean war in 1953. She is on a U.S. sanctions list over alleged links to human rights abuses in North Korea.

Kim Yo Jong is probably Kim's closest confidant and is a senior cadre in North Korea's ruling party. "But what is more important than anything is that we are together". He left the event early to attend a pre-scheduled dinner with American athletes, according to the South Korean president's office. Unfortunately the drone performance wasn't a live part of the opening ceremony, instead it was pre-recorded due to concerns over Pyeongchang's cold and windy weather conditions.

As athletes from the 92 countries competing in the Games marched in, shots from NBC's primetime coverage of the Opening Ceremony showed a large swath of empty seats behind him, giving the impression that turnout for the Opening Ceremony was low.

The Winter Olympics has thrust Kim Yo-jong into the spotlight. Mr Pence did not meet with the North Korean delegates, spokeswoman Alyssa Farah said.
