Tommy Wiseau, the famed writer/director/producer/star of the cult classic, The Room is expressing interest in playing the Joker for the Martin Scorsese-produced standalone Joker film to be directed by Todd Phillips.

Sources say Phoenix has agreed to the role but has not yet entered negotiations with studio Warner Bros., who were reportedly eyeing Academy Award victor Leonardo DiCaprio in September. Sources told Variety that Phoenix has agreed after thinking over it. WB is yet to comment on the casting reports.

The movie would fall under a yet-to-be-announced new banner of DC Comics, which would give the studio the opportunity to expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren't included in its current cinematic universe.

Phoenix has been considered for another villainous DC role in the past: Lex Luthor in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", but passed on that role, which ultimately went to Jesse Eisenberg.

The Joker was most recently played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad.

The studio had tapped The Hangover director Todd Phillips previous year to co-write a script with scribe Scott Silver.

Phoenix has been the top choice to take on other superhero roles before, but has been resistant to joining any major studio blockbuster.

Confusingly, it has been reported that he will likely reprise the role in Suicide Squad 2 and the Joker-Harley Quinn movie that is now in development.

These films are meant to "expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren't included in its current cinematic universe", said Variety. Sources are saying that Phillips" story will take place in the "80s and will take the form of a gritty crime drama, rather than your typical comic-book movie.

Phoenix now stars in the 2018 flick "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot".
