The damaged F-16 came down in an empty field near the town of Harduf in northern Israel.

Flames rise from a missile, which according to the Lebanon national news agency appears to be part of a Syrian air defense missile targeting an Israeli warplane which landed in a lemon grove, in Hasbani village, southwest Lebanon, Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018.

It was the most serious confrontation between Iran and Israel since Syria's war began in 2011 and came amid growing alarm over Syrian government offensives against rebel-held Eastern Ghouta and Idlib.

"The Secretary-General stresses once again that all concerned in Syria and the region have a responsibility and must abide by global law and relevant Security Council resolutions".

"IDF [Israel Defence Forces] has targeted the Iranian control systems in Syria that sent the #UAV into Israeli airspace".

Saturday's violence was one of the most severe incidents involving Israel, Iran and Syria during Syria's seven-year-old civil war. Tzipi Livni of the opposition Zionist Union faction said the government must do more to build worldwide backing for Israeli attacks in Syria. "Iran is dragging the region into an adventure in which it doesn't know how it will end", he said in a statement.

The Syrian people are suffering "though one of the most violent periods in almost seven years of conflict", said the United Nations statement.

"Whoever is responsible for this incident is the one who will pay the price".

Netanyahu said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and vowed to strike back hard.

"I reiterated our right and duty to defend ourselves against attacks from Syrian territory", Netanyahu said, adding that the two leaders agreed to continue their coordination on Syria. "We will continue to do whatever is necessary to protect our sovereignty and our security".

Open conflict across the Syrian border is unlikely to be in the interest of either Israel or Iran-aligned forces at the moment.

Both pilots ejected over Israeli territory and were injured, one of them critically. Though Israel has largely stayed out of the Syrian conflict, it has struck weapons convoys destined for Hezbollah - which is fighting alongside Syrian forces - nearly 100 times since 2012.

All the Israeli aircraft from this sortie returned safely. "We do not confirm any such news from Israel", he said. During the IAF operation, Syrian surface-to-air missiles downed an Israeli F-16I fighter jet. Responding anti-aircraft fire led to the downing of an Israeli fighter jet.

Israeli military said it infiltrated the country early Saturday before launching a "large-scale attack". It mounts air strikes in Syria on a regular basis, striking suspected weapons shipments to Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group.

Iran's expanding clout during the Syrian civil war, including deployments of Iran-backed forces near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, has raised alarm in Israel, which has said it would act against any threat from its regional arch-enemy Tehran.

The downing of the plane marks "the beginning of a new strategic stage that puts an end to violations of Syrian airspace and territory", Hezbollah said in a statement.

The Israeli aircraft that targeted the Iranian drone's mobile command center pursued and destroyed the target while it was moving, Bar said.

"It is a decisive decision to confront the Israeli air force and its careless behavior", he told The Associated Press in Damascus, "I think what happened today is a lesson for Israel".

Israel said it responded with a second wave of strikes on both Syrian and Iranian military targets operating inside Syria.
