'Fifty Shades Freed' dominates the weekend box office with $38.8 million

Reviews slated the climactic film as the worst entry in a awful franchise, but the wild success of each Fifty Shades movie has proven that - like the Transformers movies - they're critic-proof.

Freed's bow will come in below those of its predecessors: Fifty Shades Darker opened to $46.6 million past year, and Fifty Shades of Grey opened to a whopping $85.2 million in 2015.

The Fifty Shades of Grey franchise has now earned $1.089 billion worldwide, and is expected to top out at aruond $1.25 billion.

The films, about a sexually inexperienced woman who falls for an billionaire with eccentric sexual appetites, star Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan.

All told, industry-wide totals were well above those of last weekend, but well below those of a year ago.

The final installment of Universal's erotic trilogy based on the books of E.L. James is on track to debut with about $38.8 million from 3,768 theaters in the US and Canada this weekend, outpacing fellow newcomers Peter Rabbit and 15:17 to Paris while unseating Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

The $25-million opening bests the $24-million summer debut of Sony's critically panned but commercially successful "Emoji Movie" and the studio's April disappointment "Smurfs: The Lost Village", which opened with $13.2 million.

Sony's animated adventure comedy film "Peter Rabbit" opened in second place with an estimated 25 million dollars in its first weekend.

Based on Beatrix Potter's children's stories about a mischievous bunny, Peter Rabbit stars James Corden in the title role, along with Domhnall Gleeson, Rose Byrne, and Daisy Ridley. The film also earned mixed reviews, receiving an A- on CinemaScore and a 58% "rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes.

While it had the lowest opening of all three movies, Fifty Shades Freed still brought home a solid $38.8 million domestically in its opening weekend, debuting in 3,678 stateside locations, per Variety. The biographical drama film was produced and directed by Clint Eastwood.

"The 15:17 to Paris" collected $12.6 million and landed in third place.

Rounding out the top five were the holdovers, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, with $10-million, and The Greatest Showman, with $6-million.

Holders fill in the last 2 spots on the USA box office in the shape of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle and The Greatest Showman. Internationally, it added a further $98.1 million from worldwide markets.
