Reviews slated the climactic film as the worst entry in a awful franchise, but the wild success of each Fifty Shades movie has proven that - like the Transformers movies - they're critic-proof.

Freed's bow will come in below those of its predecessors: Fifty Shades Darker opened to $46.6 million past year, and Fifty Shades of Grey opened to a whopping $85.2 million in 2015.

Based on Beatrix Potter's children's stories about a mischievous bunny, Peter Rabbit stars James Corden in the title role, along with Domhnall Gleeson, Rose Byrne, and Daisy Ridley. The film also earned mixed reviews, receiving an A- on CinemaScore and a 58% "rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes.

While it had the lowest opening of all three movies, Fifty Shades Freed still brought home a solid $38.8 million domestically in its opening weekend, debuting in 3,678 stateside locations, per Variety. The biographical drama film was produced and directed by Clint Eastwood.

"The 15:17 to Paris" collected $12.6 million and landed in third place.

Rounding out the top five were the holdovers, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, with $10-million, and The Greatest Showman, with $6-million.

Holders fill in the last 2 spots on the USA box office in the shape of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle and The Greatest Showman. Internationally, it added a further $98.1 million from worldwide markets.
