"The question will be whether younger users will still find Snapchat cool if more of their parents and grandparents are on it".

Facebook's problem is due to SNapchat, which has doubled its take-up rate among social site users to 43%.

The research firm said it expected the first-ever decline in the 18-24 age group in the United States, a drop of 5.8 percent this year.

Facebook is still adding monthly users, but they are mainly from older age groups - and not all the young people leaving the platform are going to Facebook-owned Instagram, which is not growing as fast as Snapchat.

Instagram - owned by Facebook - is still expected to be bigger overall in the USA than Snapchat, however.

Explaining why Facebook is a preferred platform for older users, Richard Broughton, analyst at Ampere, says there are multiple factors here, according to The Guardian.

Over-55s will become the second-biggest group on the network, as 700,000 people aged 12 to 24 defect to services such as Snapchat, according to predictions by eMarketer.

A report a year ago by investment firm Piper Jaffray showed Snapchat is the preferred social network for U.S. teens, with 47 percent using the platform.

Snap's shares soared 30% last week after it revealed better-than-expected financial results and continued steady growth in its global user base, up from 178 million in the third quarter to 187 million in Q4. "But not all of those users are migrating to Instagram".

In detail, the eMarketer analysis shows Facebook will lose around 2 million users aged 24 and under, during 2018. That will lift the total number of users aged between 55-65, to 6.4 million, a size second only to the 16-34 year-olds group.

The age group younger than 25 years old is typically considered Gen Z, while the cohort directly older are millennials.

Snapchat, meanwhile, will see its user base increase by 9.3% to 86.5 million.

"Facebook has a user and usage problem, certainly, but like TV it's a "least-bad alternative" for many marketers".
