Climber killed in fall, others stranded on Oregon's Mt. Hood

Rescue Ongoing on Oregon’s Mt. Hood

Live news footage earlier in the day showed some climbers performing CPR and a helicopter airlifting a male climber to safety, but that victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Two climbers who were with the deceased climber recently returned to Timberline Lodge after being stranded at Hogsback.

Several other climbers were stranded on Oregon's tallest peak after heavy snow created unsafe climbing conditions on Oregon's tallest mountain.

About 4:40 p.m. rescuers reached a group of three that had been with the climber when he fell.

Like the other two climbers, a snowcat picked her up just above Palmer Glacier and brought her down to the lodge just before 8 p.m.

An Oregon National Guard spokesman said that climber was estimated to have fallen 700 to 1,000 feet.

"They appear to be physically and mentally exhausted, which I think is a normal reaction to an event like today", said Sgt. Brian Jensen with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office says rescuers used a sled and a rope system to bring down a woman who said she was unable to move. The temperature was right around freezing at the spot where the climber fell, Gubele said. Chris Bernard told the Associated Press.

"It's going to get darker, it's going to get colder, it's going to get windier and the overall conditions will worsen at night", Jensen said. The Director of International Programs said while it's a great time of year to do Mount Hood, that area where people are stranded is known to be a problem.

Wyatt Peck, 26, told the AP he started to go up the mountain Tuesday, but turned around. The group is stranded at a safe location, but they can not descend because the area is hazardous.
