Ted Potter Jr. outplayed the world's No. 1 player and held off everyone else to win the AT&T Pebble Beach National for his first victory since a broken ankle almost ended his career.

The American ultimately shot a three-under 69 to win the tournament by three shots at 17 under.

Potter Jr. was not considered a top-3 favorite entering the final round (though tied for the lead), and got off on the wrong foot with a bogey on the first hole. Johnson is not only the No. 1 player in the world, but is a two-time champion in this event, in addition to five other top 10 finishes.

It's the second victory of his career, the first coming almost six years ago at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic. The injury required surgery and he has battled back since, earning his PGA Tour card via the Tour last season.

Phil Mickelson turned in the most impressive round of the day, a 6-birdie 67 in which he hit 11 of 14 fairways and finished tied for second. "To come back from that it is unbelievable right now".

Kevin Streelman finished in solo sixth at 13-under 274, and Scott Stallings in solo seventh at 12-under 275.

"Just being completely out of my comfort zone, not being a professional, just kind of dealing with what comes", Fitzgerald said.

Johnson was hoping for a victory this week to strengthen his grip on his world number one ranking.

"I felt like I played OK", Johnson said.

"My game is in pretty good form and I have a golf course I really like playing next week", he said.

Dustin Johnson, who began the day tied with Potter 14-under, held the lead early on the front nine but made four bogeys against just four birdies in his first par-or-worse round at Pebble Beach in five years.
