Trump hands nuke deal 'last chance,' waives Iran sanctions

Donald Trump's 'flip-flopping is going to push Iran towards China'

Report: Trump to extend Iran sanctions relief

European Union powers on Thursday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to endorse a key nuclear agreement with Iran saying the deal is essential for worldwide security. The next sanctions waivers are due in May.

In any event, the U.S. is likely to impose new sanctions on Iran over human right abuses and support for foreign extremist groups rather than nuclear back-sliding. Nevertheless, many other restrictions, for instance over Iranian ballistic missiles, remained in place.

The other signatories to the deal - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - and the European Union, which oversaw the talks, were watching carefully. Under the deal, the US President must sign a waiver suspending the US sanctions on Iran every 120 days.

He said he was waiving the sanctions for the last time in order to give Congress and European allies 120 days to improve the agreement or face USA abandonment of the pact.

"Trump's policy & today's announcement amount to desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement, maliciously violating its paras 26, 28 & 29".

Iran has said that a decision by the United States, to impose sanctions on the head of its judiciary "crossed a red line", and has vowed to retaliate.

Trump also denied saying "anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country". Republican lawmakers who were in the Thursday meeting generally sidestepped questions about precisely what Trump said.

Heavy rain on Tuesday, which followed 10 months of drought, sent sticky mud and debris flowing down the hills into Montecito. But county emergency manager Jeff Gater said officials decided not to use the cellphone push alert system until 3:50 a.m.

"This is a last chance", the U.S. president said in a statement on Friday.

So far, Trump has continued to follow Obama's lead in regularly signing sanctions waivers so that United States economic measures against Tehran do not "snap back".

USA officials and others familiar with the administration's deliberations told the Associated Press that Mr. Trump is likely to back the accord for now but that he may pair his decision with new, targeted sanctions on Iranian businesses and people.

Russian Federation spoke out strongly Friday in favor of the accord, ahead of the announcement of Trump's decision, calling it "the result of a consensus among many parties", in the words of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

The Foreign Ministers of Britain, France and Germany threw their weight behind the pact limiting Iran's nuclear ambitions and insisted that the Islamic Republic is respecting it. "And if at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately", he warned. It said the sanctions are against global law and go against USA commitments, saying they would bring a "strong reaction" from Iran.

After Tehran had implemented its part of the deal, which was confirmed during IAEA's inspection trips, on January 16, 2016 the US administration under President Barack Obama lifted sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program.
