Cheshire emergency services deal with flooding and strong winds in wake of Storm Eleanor

Storm Eleanor has brought chaos to Europe, after first hitting the United Kingdom with 100mph (160kmph) winds and heavy rain.

A pregnant woman who had gone into labour early was flown safely to hospital by helicopter as the storm passed across mid-Wales.

In France, 200,000 households lost power and 15 people were injured.

Roads became perilous in some areas with a man injured in the Vale of Glamorgan when a tree fell on this vehicle.

Winds are not expected to be as strong as during Tuesday evening and last night, when they weere measured at 55 knots in Cambridge, over 60 miles per hour, but the Met Office says it has left strong winds in its wake. Our immediate concern must be with those whose homes and businesses have been damaged by the floods.

Nearly 25,000 homes have been left without power in Britain as the storm Eleanor thrashes the United Kingdom with winds of up to 90 miles per hour while a yellow weather warning has been issued for southern parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England.

This afternoon, 8,000 customers in Mayo remain without power.

The power company hopes to restore power to the remaining homes and stated: "ESB Networks' teams from less impacted areas of the country have been deployed to assist colleagues in the worst impacted areas".

"We have seen some heavy showers push through across the south of the United Kingdom along with hail, loud thunder and lightning", said meteorologist Becky Mitchell.

Travel will be risky and almost impossible, including during the morning commute on Wednesday.

There were numerous reports of fallen trees blocking roads, including the M25.

Two fly-away trampolines landed on train tracks in Buckinghamshire and overturned vehicles forced closures on the A1M, M6 and M5.

Power failures also affected trains between Letchworth Garden City and Cambridge, whilst an object caught in overhead lines between London Paddington and Hayes means less trains are running.

The top deck of the Eiffel Tower in Paris has been closed to the public due to winds of over 50mph (80kmph).

Due to fears around high winds part of the Dartford Crossing - the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge - was shut at 11pm.

"As the unsettled weather continues, large waves combined with high tides could lead to coastal flooding over the next few days, particularly in the west and South West of England", said flood duty manager Neil Davies.
