Tyler Barriss was charged with involuntary manslaughter in court on Friday after making a fake 911 call in December for a'swatting prank that resulted in the death of a Kansas man

At the tail end of 2017, we reported on the disastrous news of an innocent man being shot and killed after getting inadvertently tied to a swatting "prank" gone horribly wrong following an online Call of Duty match.

Swatting is the term when someone calls police with a fake story of a serious ongoing crime - like a killing, hostage situation or bomb threat - in an effort to draw a large police presence to an address. Barriss has also been charged with reporting a false alarm, and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Barriss, the suspect in the Calgary and Kansas swatting attacks, has been accused of being a swatter for hire who was paid for his attacks. Barriss is now being held on a $500,000 bond.

More information on the charges can be found on the official Wichita Eagle website.

Reports say Barriss was called by someone after a feud between two Call of Duty players broke out over a virtual "friendly kill" during a game earlier that day.

Andrew Finch 28 was shot and killed by an officer after Barriss told a 911 dispatcher he was had shot his father and was holding his family hostage at gunpoint

Barriss is wanted in Kansas for placing a "swatting" call that led to the deadly shooting of 28-year-old Andrew Finch. Finch appears to have no connection to the game or the dispute arising from it.

If convicted of involuntary manslaughter, Barriss could face up to 11 years and three months in prison, depending on his criminal history, Bennett said.

Barriss has also been linked to swatting incidents in IL and New Hampshire, according to court records.

On the evening of December 22, officers were deployed to an apartment building in the community of Bankview after someone called 911 claiming that they had shot their father and taken members of their family hostage.

One of the players allegedly called Barriss and requested he "swat" another player. Officers said they believed he was reaching for a weapon, and fired, killing him.
