Following in LG, Motorola and Alcatel's footsteps, the world's largest mobile device vendor wants to support NextRadio's initiative by unlocking the FM chip in "upcoming smartphone models in the US and Canada".

"Samsung should be lauded for taking this important step", said NextRadio President Paul Brenner in a statement. This prompted the FCC to push smartphone makers to active the FM chips found in most of their devices to allow users to access radio.

The company announced Tuesday that its upcoming devices will contain unlocked FM radio chips. According to NextRadio, Motorola and Alcatel are two others who have taken steps to "meet consumer demand and [provide] a lifeline in emergency situations". TagStation, LLC has developed the TagStationĀ® service to provide radio stations with artist and title information and unique interactivity with listeners.
