Playing in Australia and India are two biggest challenges for England, says Jos Butler

Jason Roy also surpassed Robin Smith as the highest individual scorer for England against Australia in One Day Internationals when reached 155.

(Alex) Hales was pretty disappointed (to lose his England ODI highest score).

As England tomorrow embark on the first of five one-day internationals against Australia, looking not only to get that Ashes result out of their system but also to continue preparations for next year's World Cup, Bayliss is in a unusual position. England are the only team since the World Cup with a strike rate above a run a ball (6.3 per over), have scored the most totals in excess of 300 (24) and two of more than 400 while their batsmen have hit more fours and sixes than any other team. Root, however, remained unbeaten to take them home.

"Incredibly special", Roy said.

But just days after sickness cruelly knocked him out of the last Test in Sydney, England's skipper delivered a defiant message to his tormentors. This time next year we need to be in a good enough space to be contenders for the World Cup.

Australia captain Steve Smith said his team's total was nearly 40 runs short of expected, and the early bowlers came under attack from England's top order. Joe Root acted as an appropriate foil for Roy as he scored a useful hand of 91 runs off 110 balls.

"But then I heard them cheering and saying a few things. they started going on about me and if I was actually playing a shot and all this sort of stuff".

"We play our best six batsman and all-rounder if we can and it will be structured like that", was Morgan's assessment.

"I've got a period of time going into the New Zealand series (in March) where I want to get myself clear on how I want to move forward and make sure when we start that tour there is a clear indication of what direction we're going to be going in".

Earlier, Australian opener Aaron Finch had scored his ninth one-day global century to leave England chasing a target of 305.

The hosts posted 304 for eight after being sent in by Eoin Morgan, Aaron Finch leading the way with 107 - his third ODI ton against England at the MCG.

England took the early advantage when it dismissed key batsman David Warner (2) and Steve Smith (23) inside the first 11 overs.

Finch played against type for most his innings, striking 10 fours to go with three maximums but also showing admirable restraint before eventually holing out to Moeen.

With Travis Head (5) also failing to fire, Marsh continued his strong summer after being picked ahead of Cameron White.

The second ODI will be played on January 19 at The Gabba in Brisbane.

England won the toss and chose to bowl against Australia in opening ODI at Melbourne.
