Raiders to hire Cable as offensive line coach

Tom Cable

However, it is common practice for teams to line up candidates as the Raiders did and not interview many of them once they've decided on a coach. He spent the past seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks as their assistant head coach/offensive line coach before being dismissed this month.

The Oakland Raiders are bringing back their former head coach.

Gruden was signed to a 10-year contract worth as much as $100 million to replace Jack Del Rio, who was sacked on the same day as the Raiders' season finale. This comes after Schefter reported the 10-year, $100 million contract Oakland gave Gruden was the longest coaching deal in National Football League history.

The 53-year-old originally joined Oakland in 2007, serving as the team's offensive line coach in 2007 and the first portion of 2008 before taking over as head coach during the latter season after Lane Kiffin was sacked.

Cable's tenure included allegations of physical abuse.

The 53-year-old Cable worked as the Raiders offensive line coach in 2007 before becoming the team's interim head coach four games into the 2008 season after Lane Kiffin was sacked. Napa police did not press charges.

The Raiders finished 8-8 in Cable's final season. Though Cable uses a zone-blocking scheme that fell out of favor with fans and analysts given the powerful construction of Oakland's offensive line, Cable has been around the league long enough to adapt his schemes to match personnel.

This offseason, the Raiders have a decision to make with Marshawn Lynch. They were in Seattle together from 2011 to 2015. Gruden has served as an ESPN commentator for Monday Night Football during the last nine years, although he previously coached the Raiders (1998-2001) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002-08), amassing a 95-81 record and winning a Super Bowl.
