Quique Sanchez Flores: Stoke want Espanyol's ex-Watford boss to replace Hughes

Flores emerges as Stoke's first choice

According to BBC Sport, Stoke have made Sánchez Flores their back-up target if a bid to bring in Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill fails, the main stumbling block to that eventuality being that O'Neill will insist on combining his global role with attempting to reverse Stoke's fortunes.

The 52-year-old former Watford boss guided Espanyol into the Copa del Rey quarter-finals last night, but was cryptic when answering questions about his future.

It could take a cheque for around £3m to get Flores out of Espanyol because he still has 18 months of his current deal to run. At the time Troy Deeney described the decision as "crazy".

The Irishman also has a good relationship with club chairman Peter Coates, but there is a view around the club that O'Neill would be a more short-term appointment to maintain their status, while Flores' style is more what they are looking for in the long term.

Sanchez Flores is expected to fly to England this weekend and complete the formalities that will see his salary vastly increase even before performance-related bonuses, while Stoke have had a delegation in Barcelona for the last few days in order to convince him to take the post.

The Catalan newspaper state Stoke City, or Flores directly, would have to pay Espanyol a €4m termination clause if the manager is to leave his position right now. The Republic of Ireland manager has not yet signed paperwork on his new contract with the national team.

Stoke, who are now 18th in the Premier League, face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night and they reportedly would like to have their new man in place by then.
