The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said the main break left three inches of water in the west end of Terminal 4 at JFK, and maintenance crews were sent in to mop and clean up.

"We will thoroughly investigate why this pipe burst and thoroughly investigate why it was not adequately protected and thoroughly investigate the contingency plan for this event", Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey which manages the airport, said at a press conference.

Power in the affected area of the terminal was temporarily shut off for safety reasons.

The deluge led to canceled flights and a sea of suitcases inside the baggage claim area at Terminal 4, the main gateway for global flights at the NY airport.

Several passengers were stranded for hours at New York's JFK Airport reportedly as an effect of the "bomb cyclone" leading to halting of airplanes at the runways, earlier in the day on Saturday. In terms of worldwide arrivals, there were seven global flights at the gate and those passengers have already been deplaned and are being processed through customs.

The terminal was partially evacuated after the leak and was closed to global flights on Sunday.

Yesterday, two airplanes - a China Southern and a Kuwait Airways - collided at JFK International Airport amid delays caused by a winter storm. Passengers reported sitting on the tarmac for hours before they could deplane or the planes took off.

Travelers at Kennedy Airport were still enduring delays Monday as officials vowed to "hold all parties accountable" for a broken water pipe that added to the winter woes.

The Port Authority said delays could last for days.

Many passengers were stranded in planes on the tarmac for hours. They hauled their suitcases back to Kennedy Monday morning, hoping they could manage to get to Venice by Wednesday, even if it might mean buying pricey new tickets.

Cotton said the underlying problem was a lack of communication and coordination between the private terminal operators that provide gates where planes land, and the worldwide airlines.

It began Friday with the region's first major storm of the season slamming NY with snow and subzero temperatures.

The airport experienced a record-cold temperature of 4 degrees Sunday.

"Look, when it's as cold as it was we'll cut the airport a little slack", he said. "New flights are coming in and there's no space!" he posted on Instagram.
