Reports: Mets Planning to Sign Former Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez

The Mets are adding some insurance at first base.

The Mets signed free agent first baseman Adrian Gonzalez on Saturday evening, per a report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Rather, he would be available to replace or at least tutor Dominic Smith, whose first partial season with the Mets did not convince the club he is ready to be the everyday first baseman.

Gonzalez is a career.288 hitter with 311 homers, but he spent half of last season on the disabled list and batted just.242 for the Dodgers with three homers and 30 homers in 71 games.

Gonzalez will be a free agent after the upcoming season. Gonzalez was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Atlanta Braves earlier this offseason, but was released by his new team shortly thereafter. Gonzalez can afford to take less money for a better situation since he's still being paid $22.357 million by the Braves for 2018.

Google Duo Users can Make Calls to Smartphone Without Duo Installed
Like a regular Duo call, the recipient of the video chat sees live video from the caller even before deciding to accept the call. But, most of the Google messaging apps are caught up in a hitch at this stage, pushing few users towards either Allo or Duo .

Gonzalez, who will be 36 next season, would be a cheap stopgap who would not prevent Smith, one of the Mets' top prospects, from taking over at first base in the team's eyes. Smith batted.198 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 49 games down the stretch for NY in 2017.

The Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez hits a solo home run off Reds relief pitcher Jumbo Diaz on August 22, 2016, in Cincinnati.

Gonzalez, 35, is owed $21.5 million in the final year of his contract.

Gonzalez likely won't be the opening day starter in NY, as the Mets recently signed Lucas Duda to a three-year, $39 million deal.
