Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with Indiana State Police said crews responding to the cleanup faced an "explosion risk".

The crash happened at mile marker 43 when two trucks that were stopped for a previous crash were rear-ended by a third truck. ISP says that the detour is sending traffic to US 31 south to State Road 250 and back on I-65 at mile marker 41.

Homes within a half mile of the area are being evacuated as a precaution.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles says the collision caused one of the trailers to leak hazardous chemicals, and eventually at least one of the rigs caught fire, sending black smoke billowing into the air.
