Travelers were urged to check with their carriers before heading to the airports; nearly 5,000 of Thursday's flights at USA airports were already canceled before 3 p.m., according to FlightAware, with more than 1,400 scrapped in the Northeast.

The storm's power has been increasing in a process called bombogenesis-what people are calling a bomb cyclone-which occurs when a system's air pressure quickly plunges.

Wind gusts hit more than 70 miles per hour (113 kph) in places and some areas saw as much as 18 inches (46 centimeters) of snow.

South Carolina Public Radio's Victoria Hansen says, "The last time Charleston saw so much snow was December 23, 1989 - a white Christmas just months after Hurricane Hugo caused so much damage".
