Gambit Loses Director, Gets Release Date

Deadline has confirmed that Gore Verbinski, set as the film's director in October, has left the project, citing "scheduling conflicts".

The good news is that, at least right now, Channing Tatum is still going to play the part of Gambit.

He turned up in the very bad X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by trying-so-hard-to-make-him-a-thing Taylor Kitsch, and was quickly forgotten about after the fact.

The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the news of the date change along with the release date shifts for Deadpool 2 and The New Mutants, claimed that studio insiders are still enthusiastic about the troubled project, which they describe as a heist movie with comedic elements.

"We got really lucky", Tatum told Yahoo Movies in July.

Gambit is in need of a new director. Then The Bourne Identity's Doug Liman was brought on, only to leave as well. This is an unusual move so late in the game, as the Fox film has been in casting mode and has been gearing up to shoot in New Orleans in March.

Nothing further is known at this time, but we're guessing - thanks to 20th Century Fox's ongoing success in the X-Men spin-off sub-genre - that yet another director will be announced any time now. But without a director, it seems like fans will waiting a while longer to see the card-throwing Cajun on the big screen again.

That shuffling at the top has prompted repeated delays in the film's production, which has been in active development since 2014. After all, over an entire year passed between Liman exiting Gambit and Verbinski coming aboard.
