Flaky Weather Why Tallahassee Got Its 1st Measurable Snow in Decades

Wintry conditions can be hazardous in northern Florida, since most towns don't have snow removal equipment or salting trucks.

A brutal winter storm dumped snow in Tallahassee on Wednesday for the first time in almost three decades before slogging up the Atlantic coast and smacking Southern cities such as Savannah and Charleston, South Carolina, with a rare blast of snow and ice.

This will result in extreme weather conditions, including freezing rain in SC; blizzard warnings with 50-70 miles per hour winds for multiple states, including Virginia and ME; and snow where snow hasn't fallen in decades, like Tallahassee.

The storm has already led to the closure of roads in northern Florida and southeastern Georgia, where governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in the coastal area.

State officials took safety precautions by closing roads and schools after icy roads caused a traffic accident. The last time there was significant snow in the capital city was 1989, FOX13 Tampa reported.

Here's what the 'bomb cyclone' storm looks like from space
Wind gusts hit more than 70 miles per hour (113 kph) in places and some areas saw as much as 18 inches (46 centimeters) of snow. The severe weather has led the Foreign Office to update its advice to United Kingdom travellers in, or heading to, the region.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, hardware stores reported brisk sales of ice-melting compounds, pipe insulation and sleds as an inch (2.5 centimeters) of snow was forecast. That snow also came after a prolonged blast of Arctic air. As the storm moved north, parts of Georgia and the Carolinas could get some snow, as well. However, cold snaps that lead to record lows will become less and less likely as Earth's fever runs ever higher.

Below is a closer look at the historic snowfall across the Southeast U.S.

. Florida State University's Tallahassee campus closed for the day due to the severe weather threat and in the Orlando area, theme parks closed water attractions due to cold weather.

As the cold pushed farther northward, Jerry Gorans found himself stunned by the frigid temperatures as he walked along the waterfront City Dock of Annapolis, Maryland, where birds stood still on icy water.

But eventually, temperatures will become too warm to support snow, particularly in the fall.

As temperatures increase overall, they eat away at the range for all snow to form faster than the one for extreme snow, so blizzards drop off less quickly than snows overall.
