Botswana condemns disparaging remarks made by USA president

14 January 2018, 03:16 | Taylor George

Trump reportedly used the word "shithole" to describe Haiti and El Salvador, as also African countries while discussing immigration issues with the lawmakers of United States of America on Thursday.

"The comment was reportedly made during a Thursday meeting with lawmakers about immigration reform when Trump demanded to know why the United States should accept citizens from sh**hole countries", including Haiti, El Salvador, and the entire African continent.

Botswana calls on the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union and all other progressive nations across the world to strongly condemn the remarks made by President Trump.

The statement was immediately shared by Former US Ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power on her Twitter handle saying it was odd to see Africa come together against a US statement.

The envoys released a joint statement Friday after an emergency meeting was held to address the issue.

While Kalondo said the comments were "clearly" racist, she didn't believe they indicated a shift in the U.S. stance towards Africa.

Mr Trump's latest comments provided ample fodder for talk-show hosts.

The group, which represents the 55 countries on the African continent, said that Trump's remarks "dishonor the celebrated American creed and respect for diversity and human dignity", and that the administration has a "huge misunderstanding" of the continent. He is even backed by two Republicans, who were at the white house meeting.

The tentative deal also addresses border security, including a border wall , the diversity visa lottery and chain migration . Trump has said repeatedly that he wants a bipartisan immigration deal.

Speaking to Chinese news agency Xinhua, Abebe Ayente, senior researcher at Ethiopian Foreign Relations Strategic Studies (EFRSS), a local think tank, said the comments of US President will further reduce the influence of United States on the global stage.

Mr. Trump has denied using that language but others present say he did.

Developing countries do have difficulties, but they are not "shithole countries", said ANC Deputy General Secretary Jessie Duarte, calling Trump's remarks "unfortunate".

"He didn't just name a white country, he named the whitest - so white they wear moon-screen", he said. At least one more African leader spoke up on Saturday.

The US Embassy in Accra, Ghana also took to twitter to reaffirm America's reverence for Africans.

While those missions won't stop, "if people fundamentally don't trust you and like you, it's going to change the tone of the relationship", Lewis said.

"There is a serious need for dialogue between the United States administration and the African countries".
