Bears hire ex-Oregon coach Helfrich as offensive coordinator

The Bears interviewed Fangio, 59, for their head coach position last week.

Helfrich, who was sacked after Oregon's 4-8 finish in 2016, will be hired as the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, according to an ESPN report.

The Bears recently hired coach Matt Nagy, who has said he will handle the play-calling duties. It was paramount for Nagy to have a veteran defensive coordinator that could basically be the head coach of the defense while Nagy focused on developing Mitch Trubisky, modernizing the offense, and getting his feet wet as a first year head coach.

In Helfrich, Nagy has hired an offensive coordinator whose best work comes with a system different from his own.

Helfrich was also reportedly offered the offensive coordinator position at UCLA by Chip Kelly-an especially enticing proposition for southern OR football fans given Chase Cota's commitment. He was sacked on the heels of a 4-8 finish in 2016.

London spent the last four years as the Texans' running backs coach.

Nagy's offensive staff is coming together quickly.

Fangio, of course, has been the Bears' defensive coordinator since 2015 when John Fox brought him in.

He is trying to help turn around a team that missed the playoffs for the seventh straight season and hasn't finished above.500 since Lovie Smith was sacked after going 10-6 in 2012. In Chicago, he will be trying to develop No. 2 overall draft pick Mitchell Trubisky.

The Bears also announced Friday that Chris Tabor will become special teams coordinator and Charles London will take over as running backs coach.

Fangio has coached a total of 31 years in the National Football League, with additional stops in Baltimore, Houston, Indianapolis, Carolina and New Orleans. The status of assistant offensive line coach Ben Wilkerson is unknown. The Bears also have two former Ducks, Hroniss Grasu and Kyle Long, on the offensive line.
